The Stoughton Area Resource Team, Inc. (START) provides a safety net for those in crisis. Recently, a 30-year old single father of two struggled to find work, to pay for daycare for his children and to secure a home; so much time was spent homeless and hopeless.

Innovative & Inclusive Musical Instruments - 2018 Amount Funded: $5,640.00
Kegonsa’s 350 students have some very basic and traditional musical instruments intended for music classroom use. Most of these instruments were purchased several decades ago. While they were not poor quality when they were purchased, the years of continual use have been hard on them. Many are in disrepair and in some cases unsafe due to rust and damage. In addition, due to their age they do not reflect the advancements that have been made to ensure a wide-range of learning possibilities for students of all abilities, learning styles, and cultures. All of our students deserve a well-rounded music education that aligns with national and state music standards, reflects diverse cultures, and meets our building and district initiatives of building a positive school culture, increasing inquiry and hands on learning, and inspiring innovation.
I propose we purchase instruments and interactive teaching and learning tools that will meet our students’ needs in new and innovative ways: Bring the enjoyment and excitement of group music participation while building important life-skills, such as communication, listening, teamwork, discipline and respect for others; Create opportunities for more authentic learning experiences with music from cultures around the world; Open new avenues for learning such as instruments being color-coded for visual learning Meet the needs of our students’ individual learning styles with a variety of ways to use the tools Include modifications for students with different physical needs Increase functionality by being appropriately made for younger and physically smaller students Improve student safety Protect our investment in students’ musical futures by including features like protective carrying cases
